Ashwagandha Root (Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha has been revered for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine as a rasayana, or rejuvenating herb, traditionally used to promote vitality, resilience, and overall well-being. Native to India, this low-growing shrub is a member of the nightshade family and is also known as Indian ginseng or winter cherry. While all parts of the plant have been used traditionally, the root is the most valued and is regarded in Ayurveda as an adaptogenic, grounding herb that helps balance vata dosha. With a mildly warming nature and a bitter, sweet, and astringent flavor, ashwagandha root is commonly prepared as a tea, decoction, tincture, or incorporated into herbal formulas alongside other restorative botanicals such as astragalus, reishi, holy basil, maca, and milky oat.
