Kava Root (Piper methysticum)

Kava has been revered throughout the Pacific Islands for more than 3,000 years as both a ceremonial and social beverage. Rich in cultural tradition and folklore, kava was historically prepared by grinding the root and infusing it in water for use during important gatherings and rituals. European explorers, including Captain James Cook in the 18th century, documented these ceremonial practices, which continue throughout the South Pacific today.

The root contains naturally occurring compounds known as kavalactones, which are traditionally valued for promoting relaxation and supporting the body's response to everyday stress. Kava has a distinctive peppery flavor that creates a temporary numbing sensation on the tongue before fading. It is commonly prepared as a traditional beverage, tincture, or blended with complementary herbs such as passionflower, and pairs especially well with coconut or vanilla rooibos tea.
