Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca)
Motherwort is an herbaceous perennial in the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to central Asia and southeastern Europe and now naturalized throughout much of the world. Its botanical name, Leonurus cardiaca, reflects its longstanding association with the heart. For centuries, motherwort has been treasured in European, Traditional Chinese, Native American, and Western herbal traditions for its calming, heart-supportive qualities. Considered energetically cooling and drying, it is also valued as a gently bitter herb and relaxing nervine.
The flowering aerial portions are most commonly prepared as teas, tinctures, and botanical blends. Motherwort's distinctive bitter flavor pairs especially well with complementary herbs such as hawthorn, lemon balm, and passionflower, making it a staple in many traditional calming and heart-supportive herbal formulas.
