Passionflower (Passiflora edulis)

Passionflower is a graceful climbing vine native to the southeastern United States, Central America, and South America. Its intricate blossoms inspired Spanish missionaries to name the plant after the Passion of Christ, while Indigenous peoples of North America had long valued it as both a nourishing food and medicinal herb. Archaeological evidence suggests passionflower has been used for thousands of years, with ancient seeds discovered at Indigenous sites throughout the southeastern United States.

In Western herbalism, passionflower is regarded as a classic nervine, traditionally used to promote relaxation, calm the mind, and support the body's response to everyday stress. The flowering aerial portions are commonly prepared as teas, tinctures, and herbal blends, pairing especially well with calming botanicals such as valerian, skullcap, and cramp bark.
