Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata)

Native to the southeastern United States and now widely cultivated throughout North America and Europe, Passiflora incarnata is a perennial climbing vine admired for its intricate, unmistakable flowers and gentle calming properties. A member of the Passifloraceae family, it features three-lobed leaves, curling tendrils, and elaborate blossoms with lavender filaments surrounding five stamens and three prominent stigmas. Spanish missionaries in the 16th century interpreted the flower's unique structure as a symbol of the Passion of Christ, inspiring the common name passionflower. Other common names include maypop, wild passionflower, and apricot vine.

Passionflower has been used for thousands of years in Indigenous North American traditions. Archaeological discoveries of ancient seeds near Virginia suggest its use dates back to prehistoric times, while the Algonquian, Cherokee, and other Native peoples traditionally consumed the fruit, prepared beverages from the plant, ate the young shoots, and used various parts in their herbal practices. By the late 18th century, passionflower had also become established in European herbalism.

Regarded as a classic nervine in Western herbalism, passionflower is traditionally valued for its cooling, calming, and soothing qualities. It has long been used to promote relaxation, ease a busy mind, and support the body's response to everyday stress. The flowering aerial portions are commonly prepared as herbal tea, tinctures, and botanical infusion blends, making passionflower a favorite herb for both home and professional apothecaries.
