Red Raspberry Leaf
Red Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus)
Recognized for its sweet fruit and pleasantly flavored leaves, red raspberry has been cherished for centuries in both culinary and herbal traditions. Native to Europe, North America, and western Asia, Rubus idaeus is an easily cultivated member of the rose family (Rosaceae). The leaves are especially valued for producing a smooth, full-bodied herbal tea with a flavor reminiscent of black tea, but naturally caffeine-free. They are also a popular addition to nourishing herbal infusion blends.
Raspberry has a rich history woven through mythology and herbal tradition. According to Greek legend, the berries were discovered by the Olympian gods on Mount Ida, while the earliest records of cultivation appear in the writings of the Roman agriculturist Palladius. By the Middle Ages, raspberry juice was used in paintings and illuminated manuscripts, and King Edward I encouraged widespread cultivation throughout Europe. In North America, teas made from raspberry leaves were traditionally enjoyed by the Cherokee, Iroquois, and Mohawk, and the herb continues to hold an important place in Western herbalism.
