Rehmannia Root (Rehmannia glutinosa)
Rehmannia, also known as shu di huang, is one of the 50 fundamental herbs of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been valued for centuries for its restorative qualities. A member of the Scrophulariaceae family, its thick, fleshy root is traditionally steamed before use, a preparation favored in many classic Chinese herbal formulas.
The species name glutinosa refers to the naturally sticky texture of the root. Rehmannia root is most commonly prepared as a decoction (tea) and is often combined with warming herbs such as ginger or cardamom to promote balanced digestion. It remains a cornerstone botanical in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is frequently included in traditional wellness formulations.
