St. John's Wort (Hypericum perforatum)

St. John's wort is a sun-loving perennial in the Hypericaceae family, native to Europe and now naturalized throughout temperate regions of the world. Growing along roadsides and meadows, it is recognized by its bright yellow, star-shaped flowers, which are traditionally harvested during peak bloom around St. John's Day (June 24) and throughout the summer.

For centuries, Hypericum perforatum has been an important herb in traditional Western herbalism, valued for promoting a healthy mood and emotional balance.* During the Middle Ages, it was also regarded as a sacred herb believed to offer protection from misfortune and negative influences.

The flowering tops are commonly prepared as teas, tinctures, and oil infusions. While dried flowers make a useful infused oil, only fresh plant material develops the characteristic deep red color associated with hypericin-rich preparations. Although prized in herbal practice, St. John's wort has also become a naturalized and, in some regions, invasive plant.
