Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis)

Valerian is a perennial herb in the Caprifoliaceae family, native to Europe and parts of Asia and now naturalized throughout North America. While its delicate white to pale pink flowers have a sweet fragrance, the roots are famously pungent. Despite their distinctive aroma, valerian root has been valued since the time of ancient Greece and has remained an important herb in traditional European herbalism for centuries.
