Native to the grasslands and arid regions of central North America, yucca (Yucca glauca) is an evergreen perennial recognized by its long, narrow leaves that grow in a basal rosette. A member of the Agavaceae family, yucca has long been valued by Indigenous peoples for its many practical uses. The flowers and seed pods have been eaten as food, the tough leaves woven into cordage and baskets, and the roots utilized for their wellness-supporting properties. Rich in natural saponins, the root also produces a gentle lather when mixed with water, giving rise to the common name soapweed, and has traditionally been used to make soaps, shampoos, and other natural cleansing products.
